Fresh Strawberry-Basil Margaritas

Amazing fresh and light summer cocktail! The following recipe is similar to one I had read online with frozen limeade as one of the main ingredients. In order to reduce the sugar and keep things fresh, I ditched the frozen limeade and used fresh limes instead. Frozen limeade concentrate has about 26 grams of sugar per 1.5 fluid ounces!

Ingredients

1 cup freshly squeezed lime juice, about 6 medium limes
3 tablespoons stevia, or similar sweetener
2 cups water
2 to 2½ cups tequila - I used 2¼ cups, which is almost an entire fifth
about 1 lb. strawberries, halved or sliced - save a couple for garnish, if desired
8 to 12 fresh basil leaves, crumpled to release flavor

Directions

Combine lime juice, stevia, and water in a glass pitcher. Stir until sweetener is dissolved. Stir in tequila, strawberries, and basil leaves, using at least 8 basil leaves. Cover and place in fridge for at least 12 hours, or overnight.

Letting the flavors blend longer will produce a more red color and milder tequila flavor in the liquid. The strawberries, however, will become quite strong, as they soak up the liquor. The photo above was taken over 24 hours after combining the ingredients. The Margaritaville glass is merely show; I do not recommend that brand of tequila.

When ready to serve, lightly salt the rim of each glass, if desired. Moisten the rim of each glass first with juice from a lime or strawberry. Crumple a few more basil leaves into the pitcher, and then serve over ice. Garnish as desired with additional basil, strawberry, or lime.
